Martha Taylor Johnson Duckworth
Birth: Mar. 4, 1830, Farmersville, Posey County, Indiana, USA
Death: Oct. 16, 1905, Springerton, White County, Illinois, USA

Martha Taylor Johnson was the daughter of D.F. and Dorcus (Duckworth) Johnson of Black Township, Posey County, Indiana. Martha was born on March 4, 1830 on the family farm. She had eleven brothers and sisters: Abilena, Mary "Polly" R., Hannah H., Isabel, Flora Ann, Nathan H., Marcia, Laura, Seth, Pitts, Frederick Pleman. Just under twenty years of age, Martha married John McFaddin Duckworth on January 24, 1850. John was born in Posey County, Indiana about 1829. The U S Census of 1850 reveals that John had established a farm in Black Township and was twenty-one years of age. Martha D. (it should have been a "T" for Taylor, her middle name) was twenty. By 1860 they were still farming in Black Township. John was head of the household and the farm had real estate valued at $600 and personal estate of $300. Living at home were Martha T. (30), Catherine (8), Dorcus (6), Mark (3) and Isabelle (1). Farming next door were my great grandparents David and Margaret (Duckworth) Jones. Margaret was Martha's aunt. By 1870 the family was still farming in Black Township. John was forty-two, Martha was forty-one and five children were living at home: Dorcus (16), Mark (13), Isabelle (10) Nathan (9) and Grace (3). Their eldest child Catherine had married and no longer living on the farm. By 1880 John and Martha with two of their children (Nathan and Grace) were living in the Enfield Township, White County, Illinois where John had established a farm. It is interesting to note that three more sons have been mentioned as children of Martha and John: Miles (b 1850, d 1851); Arthur (b 1862, d ?) and Herbert (b 1866, d 1868). However, these three children have been difficult to verify as they have not been included in any U S census reports. The 1900 census records that Martha, now a widow, was living in Springerton, Mill Shoals Township, White County, Illinois. Her daughter Grace (who had married a man named Ward and now a widow) and Martha's grandaughter Ora Duckworth were living with her. Martha passed away on October 16, 1905 in Springerton. Her interment site is most likely in or near Springerton, but has not been identified.
