Thomas, s. of Thomas (5), b. 1717; capt; kept tavern and made shoes in Nfd; sergt. in French war; while leading seventeen men fr. Nfd. to Fort Dummer, July 14, i748, was attacked by a large party of French and Indians; Sergt. Taylor and 10 men were taken captive, 2 were k. and 4 escaped; Taylor was redeemed and arrived home Sept. 27; in Nov., 1748, the Gen. Court voted him £50 "in
consideration of his bravery" in that action; to commemorate this event his grandson, Lewis Taylor of Hinsdale, erected a marble monument near the place in 1874; he d. Mar. 25, 1778. The following is the epitaph on his gravestone in the Hooker burying yard at Hinsdale:
what Christ and conscience taught as good
with strictest caution he pursued:
yet not on works, but Grace relied
and with triumphant courage died.3
