Several documents demonstrate that Alice (Fereby) (Penn) (Brayne) Newbury was the mother of Ralph Penn.[102] ; the footnote "102 Hertfordshire, to Ralph, son and heir of John Penn, late citizen and mercer of London, and in the same court Ralph granted the same land to them for the life of Alice (CP 25/1/91/119, number 33, abstract available in the Feet of Fines [note 78] and linked to The Anglo-American Legal Tradition [note 2]). In a will dated 16 April 1475, recorded in Calendar of the Close Rolls, Edward IV, vol. II (London: HMSO, 1953), 419, Ralph Penn named his mother Alice Brayne. In 1480–83 Alice was designated as the wife of John Newbury in a Chancery pleading, C 1/62/430, involving “Ralph, son and heir of John Penne. v. John Newbury and Alice, his wife, complainant’s mother: Tenement in Aldenham; land in London and at Lambeth” (abstract accessed 28 May 2010, The
National Archives [note 43]). In his 1484 will, Ralph did not mention his mother, but did mention his Fereby cousins (Prerogative Court of Canterbury, 27 Logge, PROB 11/7, will dated 11 March 1483/4, confirmed 30 September 1485, proved November 1486)."
