Garret Bogart was "born in Bergin [sic] county, New Jersey, December 14, 1808. In 1814 his parents took him to Hamilton county, Ohio, where he resided until 1833, proceeding to La Porte county, Michigan, and there dwelt one year. Removing to Hancock county, Illinois, he there remained during the month of December, 1834, and in February, 1835, transferred his abode to the Iowa side of the Mississippi residing on a claim until 1852. In that year he crossed the plains to Oregon with one hundred head of cattle, three wagons and one carriage. On the journey his cattle all died, and through other catastrophies, when he arrived in the State, he had but two wagons. After remaining during that winter in Marion county, he came to Lane county and settled on the claim adjoining that on which he now lives. In 1832 he married, in Ohio, Miss Elizabeth Embrey, and has seven surviving children."
