Patrick Hickey was the first to die. He was accidentally killed while felling a tree. The effect of this on the Savage brothers was stunning; and the story has been handed down to us, tragic as the awful discovery by Eve of the dead body of Abel. They seemed to have a great regard for Hickey, who was of extraordinary physical proportions and corresponding strength. In Ireland, of course, they never used an axe; in their new conditions it would be the first tool they had to get accustomed to...The widow Hickey lived with her three sons, Patrick, John and James, and one daughter, Mrs. James Mahoney, for a time; and then married Thomas Cluney by whom she had one son, Lawrence."
