| | "The March family seems to have been in the neighborhood of Sherford, co. Devon, as early as September 1569, when a John Marche was charged in the court of the manor of Stokenham, co. Devon, with diverting the water at Allymore from its right course, so that it could not run to the mill of the lord of the manor. The same charge against John Marche is found in the records of the court of the manor of 30 Sept. 1570. On 3 Jan. 1580/1 William Marche,-son of John Marche, is mentioned in the court rolls of the manor, and on 9 Oct. 1587 Peter Marche, a stranger, son of John Marche, appears in the rolls, as does Peter March, a stranger, probably the same man, in 1599-1601. Moreover, on 29 Mar. 1602, Robert Marche and Richard Marche of Alvington, co. Devon, were distrained to answer to the lord for hunting in Stokenham manor. Since the parish registers of Sherford begin late (in 1713), probably because Sherford was formerly a chapelry of Stokenham, where the registers begin in 1578, the exact relationship of these early Marches to the family to which Ulalia (March) Burt belonged has not been determined; but it seems likely that the John Marche of 1569 and 1570, who had sons William (1580/1) and Peter (1587, 1599-1601), was the great-grandfather of Ulalia March, the wife of Henry Burt. John’s son William being probably identical with William Marche, the Elder, the testator of 1612, with whom the following pedigree begins."2 |
