Note to Genealogists on the identity of Gysbert: To save some future student of the genealogy of this family considerable time and trouble, it may be well to state that Gysbert could not have been the son of Elbert Elbertsen or Elberz who was drowned in the North River before Nov. 9, 1655, while trying to board the ship Bontekoe, and whose wife was Elizabeth Grevenraet ; for she, as his widow, later married Dominie Samuel Drisius, and died Dec. 25, 1687, leaving a will in which she names her children, and there is no Gysbert mentioned amongst them. Her first husband was a De Reimer and she was the ancestress of the De Reimer family in New York. Gysbert was not the son of Elbert Elbertsen who married on August 17, 1645, Aletje Cornelissen, widow of Gerrit Wolphertson Van Cowenhoven, for the reason that he (Gysbert) was a married man in 1661 ; nor could Gysbert have been a son of this Elbert Elbertsen by a previous marriage, for the record of the marriage of Elbert Elbertsen in 1645 states that h.e (Elbert) was then a single man. There was another Elbert Elbertse, who took the oath of allegiance in Kings County in 1687, stating that he was at that time fifty years of age, so we must also eliminate him as the father of Gysbert. This Elbert Elbertse was not, however, the Elbert Elbertsen who, as above stated, married Aug. 17, 1645, Aletje Cornelissen, for this Elbert Elbertsen was born in 1620 and Elbert Elbertse was born in 1637.2
Note on the name from Outen Bogart Notes: "The spelling of the surname of this family is so varied in the records consulted, that, after the second generation, for convenience sake, the surname Outen Bogart will be used in this article. It has been difficult to distinguish and separate this family from those bearing the name of Bogert, but conscientious endeavor has been made to do so. This article has been compiled from the Dutch records of New York and Acquackanock, New Jersey, — the wills and deeds of New York,—the Lutheran Church records of New York, — and from family manuscripts and Bible records."2
