"[H]is entry in Nieuw Nederlandsch Biografisch Woordenboek 2:823-4 ...states that in Sept. 1598 he was captain of the yacht De Eendracht in the fleet of Olivier van Noort, and the only survivor of a raid on the Portuguese at the Island of Principe off Africa. In Jan. 1600 he became captain of the Frederik Hendrik at the Straits of Magellan when his predecessor was put ashore for insubordination. He sailed off course and after a prolonged voyage reached the East Indies where his crew sold the ship for cloves. He was found near Bantam in 1602 and returned to the Netherlands, where he is believed to have died by 1618."2
