Several of the sources cited here name Sarah as the grand daughter of Baron de Beelen (or Bulan), later Frederic Beelen, without further citation. Primary sources have the Baron's son Anthony in Pittsburgh, so she would be his daughter. The most detailed record of Anthony's family does not name her, though it does say there were "several children" of his first marriage, but "two of them married" [Mary and Elizabeth Antoinette]. The circumstantial evidence for Sarah being in the Beelen family are (1) her first son was named Gilbert Lafayette Bulan (see note for him); (2) in the 1850 census, she is recorded as having real estate valued at $250,000, an amazing sum for her time, and likely inherited; (3) there a mention of Sarah Beelen in The Pittsburgh Weekly Gazette, 21 Nov 1823, p. 2, for an exhibition of Domestic Manufactures. "Carpeting, 1 piece," by Sarah Beelen of Pittsburgh. On the other hand, there is a record that Anthony had a dau. named Sarah, who d. 1824 (Butler Co. PA Public Library index, Butler Sentinel, 24 Jul 1824, p. 3, obituaries, Miss Sarah Beelen, dau. of Anthony Beelen), but this item has not been seen.3 | ||
