Thomas Savage, his wife, their two children and three step-sons (named Bulmer) had first left Ireland for Brazil, where Thomas fought in the army of Emperor Don Pedro. The family later left Brazil for the New Brunswick Colony, arriving around 1827. Thomas's wife died at sea during the voyage to St. John.
