"Miss Viele makes no mention in the Viele Records of any irregularity in the birth of the first child of Maria du Trieux. In the absence of any record of the first marriage of Maria du Trieux to Cornelis Volckertsen this will probably never be settled with certainty. At the time this baptismal record was made, May 27, 1640, it was the custom to give the father’s name alone, and not the mother’s. The fact that in this case the mother's name is given alone, and not the father’s, speaks for itself to those familiar with the early Dutch records. Mr. J. H. Innes, in his New Amsterdam and its People (page 301, note), speaking of Maria du Trieux, says, “After some vicissitudes in her life, she is supposed to have married Cornelis Volckersen.“ The “vicissitudes” must refer to this birth."
