Of the early Birelys in Frederick, Maryland the greatest number of records were left by (Frederick) Ludwig, or Lewis, grandson of the emigrant, who founded a tannery in Frederick, a shop in Baltimore, had numerous land transactions and was prominent in the Lutheran Church. The tannery was begun before 1810. His political activities were recorded by Jacob Engelbrecht in the well-known diaries. Descendants of Lewis were prominent in tanning, publishing and banking in Frederick.2
