Michael was the eldest son of Thomas and Rachel (Jones) Givens (my great great grandparents) and was born about 1809 in Black Township, Posey County, Indiana. His father was a respected farmer, businessman, public servant and state senator who took the U S Census for 1830 in Posey County. Michael served as a witness of this enumeration of Black Township at the age of twenty-one. He was selected a petit junior juror for Posey Circuit Court several times, with the earliest reference in February of 1831. His grandfather, the Reverend Samuel Jones, was part of a group trying to establish a seminary in southwestern Indiana. Michael was an 1833 signatory to a petition seeking the locating of this proposed seminary in Posey County. Michael married Ann Owens in Posey County, with the license issued May 21, 1831. He and Ann had four children: Thomas, Marion, Jasper and Rachel C. He bought Marrs Township property in 1835 and lived with his family there after that date. He and Ann were early members of the Bethel Regular Baptist Church (which his grandfather founded and served as its first minister). This church was located near the hamlet of Farmersville, north of Mount Vernon. They transferred by letter to another congregation, possibly upon his move to Marrs Township, which is just east of Mount Vernon. His wife Ann (Owens) Givens, an Indiana native was born in 1813 and was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Owens. At the young age of thirty-two, Michael passed away on February 3, 1841. Just a few months earlier, his older sister Mary "Polly" Givens McKinney had died. Family tradition has both Michael and Polly buried at the Templeton Grav[e]yard where many members of the Givens clan are interred. His wife Ann deeded their Marrs Township property to Jonathan Nesler and married George Tillman Downen Sr. They moved to Gallatin County Illinois. Ann died on August 30, 1896, a resident of Ridgway Township, Gallatin County.
