  1. [S420] Holland St. John, online http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi<. Ann was born in 1813 in Posey County, Indiana. She was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Owens. Very little is known about Ann's parents and her youth. In May 1831 in Posey County, Indiana she married (1) Michael Baker Givens and May 21, 1831. Michael was the son of Thomas and Rachel (Jones) Givens (my ancestors) and was born about 1809 in Black Township, Posey County. His father was a respected farmer, businessman, public servant and state senator. Ann and Michael had four children: Thomas, Marion, Jasper and Rachel C. They farmed in Marrs Township. Ann and Michael were members of the Bethel Regular Baptist Church located near Farmersville, north of the town of Mount Vernon. Later, they transferred to another congregation, possibly upon their move to Marrs Township. Michael passed away on February 3, 1841. Ann deeded their Marrs Township property to Jonathan Nesler and married (2) George Tillman Downen Sr. on January 28, 1846. George was born on October 17, 1805 in Tennessee. The U S Census of 1860 reports that George and Ann were living in Robinson Township, Posey County, Indiana. George was fifty-five and Ann was listed as being forty-four. Living at home were Lucretia (18), George T. (16), Mary (14), Charlotte (12), Lekia? (6), Hannah (4) and Martha (5/12). The oldest three children were by George's first wife. Charlotte, Lekia?, Hannah (born November 18, 1856) and Martha Ann (born November 24, 1859) were Ann and George's. Sometime around 1870 they moved to Gallatin County, Illinois where he established a farm. One source mentions additional children (Nancy, Ann, and Eletha) but it is not known if these were Ann's children by George. George passed away in 1880 in Posey County, Indiana and is buried in Downen Cemetery. Ann died on August 30, 1896 in Ridgeway Township, Gallatin County, Illinois and is buried in the Old Cottonwood Cemetery located in Gallatin County, Illinois. Her daughter Hannah Downen Anderson is also buried in the same cemetery.
  2. [S54] 1840 U.S. Federal Census. eldest female in the hh of [George] Tilman Downen was age 30 to 39, giving a birth year of 1800 to 1811; the marr. of George Tilman and Lucretia took place in 1824. Assuming she marr. (in 1825) no younger than 16, the latest birth year would be 1809. But see the 1830 census where the spouse of Tilman is 15 to 19, or a birth year range of 1810 to 1815. The simplest explanation is that the 1830 data is wrong, but there could be others.
