The Savages claim the distinction of having had a farm in Ireland; not freehold of course, but a farm, "Bally-na-moche". They consisted of the mother, six brothers, four sisters, and the family of the eldest brother, Daniel, who after the death of his first wife married again, and had a second family in Ireland. He never came to America, and all accounts of him and the second family are lost. In the order of age the brothers were: Denis, John, Patrick, Maurice, William, James. One sister, Mrs. Timothy Hartnett, joined her husband; a Mrs. Mahoney came to St. Martin, N. B., and a Mrs. Hearn went with her husband to the United States; the youngest daughter, Margaret, married to Patrick Hickey, came, accompanied by her mother, Margaret (née Lane).
They did not come all together, but at different times as their means permitted, in groups of six or seven. Some landed at St. John, some at Miramichi, and some even at Quebec. The journey over land that a number of them were obliged to take from Quebec, carrying small infants, as well as all their worldly effects, was among the greatest hardships they suffered. It took some five years before they were all united in Melrose."

The effect of this on the Savage brothers was stunning; and the story has been handed down to us, tragic as the awful discovery by Eve of the dead body of Abel. They seemed to have a great regard for Hickey, who was of extraordinary physical proportions and corresponding strength. In Ireland, of course, they never used an axe; in their new conditions it would be the first tool they had to get accustomed to...The widow Hickey lived with her three sons, Patrick, John and James, and one daughter, Mrs. James Mahoney, for a time; and then married Thomas Cluney by whom she had one son, Lawrence."
