- [S737] History of Posey County (Goodspeed) (Chicago: The Goodspeed Publishing Co., 1886), p. 465: "ELIJAH ALLDREDGE, a native of the county in which he now resides, was born June 17, 1820, and is one in a family of six children born to Henry and Marian (Self) Alldredge. His early days were passed on his father's farm, in Black Township, and in going to school, and after attaining his majority he began the battle of life for himself. In June, 1840, the nuptials of his marriage with Rebecca Duckworth were celebrated. She is a daughter of Thomas and Catharine Duckworth, and was born in Posey County April 7, 1821. To their marriage these children were born: Marshal, Sarah, Sylvester, Alphonso and Winfield, deceased; and Mary, Victoria, Delia, Sally and Elijah, living."
- [S737] History of Posey County (Goodspeed), Goodspeed's History of Posey County (1888), p. 465, names these children of Elijah and Rebecca: Mary, Victoria, Delia, Sally and Elijah (living at time of publication) and Marshal, Sarah, Sylvester, Alphonso and Winfield, (deceased). From marriage and death records, it appears that Sarah and Sally are the same person. No records for Alphonso or Winfield have been found. The other seven children all appear in the family in at least one census record. Also appearing in census records but not named in Goodspeed are Theodora, Mariah and Emily. This genealogy includes these three in lieu of Sally, Alphonso and Winfield.
Goodspeed does not name Elijah's second wife, Mary Ann Erwin, first married to William Black, and presumes that Rebecca was the mother of all the children. - [S20] 1850 U.S. Federal Census. Elijah (29), b. IN, farmer, real estate value $1200; Rebecca (27), b. IN.
