In this genealogy it is Mary, born in 1699 the daughter of Ensign John Hitchcock and Mary Ball, who marries, first, Samuel Taylor (in 1718) and, second, Daniel Arms (in 1737). This follows Sheldon in History of Deerfield (II Genealogies:337) where it says Samuel married "Mary, dau. John Hitchcock of Spfd." Edward Hitchcock in his Genealogy of the Hitchcock Family has Mary, born in 1688 the daughter of Capt. Luke Hitchcock (John's uncle) and Sarah Burt, who marries Samuel, then David (p. 409). Interestingly, Hitchcock says that Mary, daughter of John, married "––– Arms" (apparently using John's will as the source) with no other information (p. 213). Then there is the memorial stone in the Old Cemetery in Charlemont which says she died in June 1781 "in the 87th Year of her age" – giving a birth year of about 1694, or in the middle of the birth dates of the two Marys (by then she was a widow for the third time, of Ebenezer Barnard). The age of her first marriage leans to the choice of Mary at age 19 rather than Mary, age 30. Adding to the confusion, Hitchcock says that another daughter of Luke and Sarah, Mercy, married George Colton. In fact it seems that it was her sister Mary (erroneously given as the wife of Samuel Taylor, then Daniel Arms) who married Colton. Mercy probably married Ebenezer Day, though she would have been only fifteen years old . Since the marriage records do not name the parents we have to speculate at times.2 | ||
