He was at Bunker Hill, Saratoga, Brandywine, and at the winter encampment at Valley Forge. He commanded the company which relieved Gen. Anthony Wayne after the surrender of Stony Point, May 31, 1779, and was with that officer when it was recaptured July 15, 1779. He was one of Andre's guard at his execution, and often dwelt on the brave deportment of that unfortunate officer. He said that when Col. Schamel told him to speak if he wished to say anything, Andre raised the handkerchief from over his eyes and said: "Gentlemen I wish you all to bear me witness that I meet my fate like a brave man." His arms were tied so slightly that with some difficulty he could raise the handkerchief from before his eyes."
